When leading media services agency OMD came to us for a fresh way to market its services and expertise, we put our creative team together with Douglas Lim.
Yes, Douglas Lim - formerly of Kopitiam fame, currently of Get Hitched fame. We set his crazed imagination loose, and he came up with a stumper of a concept. The Adventures of Bulat is Malaysia's answer to the controversial slapstick comedy Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan. Once again, veteran thespians Rashid Salleh and Gavin Yap were recruited by Douglas to star in this spoof. But a surprise addition to the cast is acclaimed actress Sharifah Amani. Fresh from award-winning turns in Sepet and Gubrah, this petite screen goddess made our day by agreeing to take on multiple roles. The premise itself is enough to tickle. The dictatorial leader of the fictional country Rambustan sends Bulat -Rambustan's best salesman - to market Rambustan-ian products in Malaysia in the hopes of boosting Rambustan's non-existant GDP. For the glory of his homeland, Bulat ventures into Malaysia. But before he begins selling, he needs to study the Malaysian consumer market. While it might not gross as much money as Borat did, or achieve worldwide notoriety, we are content in the fact that the client was more than happy with the final product. True enough, the audience at the premier laughed itself silly. OMD execs unanimously agreed that it was an unqualified success. |
